On the Table #41

Six new Battleforces for Age of Sigmar, House Orlock hits the Underhive, and SPIEL Essen leaves the board game world with a full new-release list. Here is what is on the table this week.

Six New Battleforce Boxes For Age Of Sigmar

Right after the 40K Christmas boxes, Age of Sigmar gets its own set of Battleforces.

Games Workshop revealed six new boxes, each built as a ready-made army core. Pre-orders are coming "soon", and the upcoming Sunday Previews will give exact dates. Prices have not been announced yet.

  • Stormcast Eternals – Annihilation Host: Lord-Commander Bastian Carthalos, a Lord-Relictor, a Lord-Celestant, 3 Praetors and 9 Annihilators
  • Cities of Sigmar – Knights of Hammerhal: Tahlia Vedra, a Freeguild Cavalier-Marshal and 10 Freeguild Cavaliers
  • Maggotkin of Nurgle – Plaguesworn Host: a Harbinger of Decay, a Lord of Blights, 3 Sloven Knights, 5 Putrid Blightkings, 10 Rotswords, 14 Pox-Wretches and 6 Mire Kelpies
  • Orruk Warclans – Grunta Stampede: a Tuskboss on Maw-Grunta, a Maw-Grunta Gouger and 6 Gore-Gruntas
  • Nighthaunt – Court of the Undying King: Nagash, 2 Dreadblade Harrows, 10 Dreadscythe Harridans, 10 Bladegheist Revenants and 10 Grimghast Reapers
  • Slaves to Darkness – Legion of Damnation: a Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount, 5 Chaos Chosen, 3 Varanguard, 5 Chaos Knights and 10 Chaos Warriors

With Nagash and a Nurgle horde in the mix, a lot of plastic is about to land on a lot of painting desks. Time to think about where it all goes: we have foam trays for every one of these armies.

House Orlock Rules The Roads Of Necromunda

The Underhive's road warriors are next in line, and the 2027 roadmap is out.

After House Escher and House Goliath, House Orlock gets its turn. The Underhive Journal: Orlock – The House of Iron goes up for pre-order this Saturday, October 31. It adds new fighters and equipment, two variant gangs (Wrecking Crew and Outrider Gang), campaign rules, territories and a card pack. On the miniatures side there are a leader and champion box, a Road Warriors gang box and an Ogryn Minders kit.

Looking further ahead, Games Workshop plans Ash Wastes and Hive Secundus updates for the first half of 2027, followed by brutes and bounty hunters in the second half. The announced Necromunda Roleplay game has been cancelled; the miniatures will still be released.

  • Journal pre-order: Saturday, October 31
  • Gangs: leader and champion box, Road Warriors gang box, Ogryn Minders kit
  • 2027: Ash Wastes and Hive Secundus (H1), brutes and bounty hunters (H2)

More gangs mean more models to protect on the way to the next campaign night. Our Necromunda trays are ready for them: Necromunda

SPIEL Essen Sends Board Gamers Home With Full Lists

Friday and Saturday were sold out, and the new-release lists are enormous.

SPIEL Essen 2026 was packed. Publishers such as Asmodee, PD Verlag, B-Rex and HABA put long lists of new releases on the table. Among the announcements that caught our eye are a second edition of Helvetia, a Pantheon Edition of Elysium with new components and revised artwork, and a Special Edition of Troyes from Pearl Games and Quined Games, which is run as a crowdfunding campaign.

Anyone who came home with a heavy bag now has the usual question: where does everything go? Our organizers and foam sets keep big-box games tidy and ready to play.

On Our Radar

Golden Demon 2026 at SPIEL Essen. The European leg of Warhammer's painting competition ran across 17 categories. According to Tabletop Battles, the Slayer Sword went to Maxime Penaud for a Marneus Calgar in the Warhammer 40,000 single miniature category.

Deutscher Spielepreis 2026. Artengarten (Feuerland Spiele) won the main prize, ahead of Boss Fighters QR in second and Galactic Cruise in third place. Toriki: Eine Insel voller Abenteuer took the children's game award, and Take Time won the À-la-carte prize.

Tough weeks for the industry. Auroch Digital, the studio behind Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2, is laying off around a quarter of its staff. Osprey Games reportedly let go of its board and card game team and is looking for a buyer for those lines, which include the Undaunted series. And at Wizards of the Coast, a union vote is expected in November.
