The Adeptus Custodes take over the spotlight this week, the new Space Marine codex is only days away, and Games Workshop is changing how a lot of us paint. Meanwhile, the board game world is gearing up for a big month.

Adeptus Custodes: A New Codex, New Kits and 13 Detachments

The Emperor's golden guard gets its moment in the sun.

Games Workshop used its Sunday Preview to show off what's coming for the Adeptus Custodes: a new codex, a batch of new plastic kits and, in a follow-up article, a first look at all 13 detachments. Six of them carry the "Unique: Shield Host" keyword and are themed after the main Shield Hosts from the lore, with layered bonuses for Dreadnoughts, Terminators or Sisters of Silence. The new models work in both Warhammer 40,000 and The Horus Heresy, so collectors can play their Custodes in either setting.

• New kits: Aquilon Terminators (6), Gyrfalcon Jetbikes (2), Telemon Heavy Dreadnought and Pallas Grav-Attack
• Codex: Adeptus Custodes with 13 detachments, plus a Combat Patrol and a Command Pack
• Detachments include Aquilan Shield, Dread Host, Shadowkeepers and Null Maiden Vigil

Codex: Space Marines Lands on 3 October

The new edition's flagship codex is almost here.

The Space Marines codex is due on Saturday, 3 October, and it brings universal stat changes to most Marine profiles. Because other books lean on the Marine datasheets, the ripples reach Grey Knights and the Chaos variants as well. Codex Orks has been out since early September, so the new edition is now rolling on quickly. If you are collecting, re-basing or simply rebuilding your army for the new rules, this is a good moment to think about how you transport it.

Necromunda: New Orlocks Revealed

Iron, engines and Ogryn muscle: House Orlock is getting a fresh look.

Games Workshop revealed a new range for the Orlock gangs. Road Warriors and Road Sergeants with Cyber-Mastiffs form the core, while two Ogryn Minders bring some extra heft. The accompanying Underhive Journal: Orlock adds two new gang types, Outriders and Wrecking Crews. No release date has been given yet.

Warhammer Tone Pro: 150 New Paints

Games Workshop just added a whole new way to paint.

The new Warhammer Tone Pro range brings 150 paints: 30 colours, each in five numbered tones. Tone 1 is the darkest and tone 5 the lightest, so you always know which shade to reach for when you build up shadows, layers and highlights. Games Workshop promises strong coverage from the first coat, even for tricky colours like yellows and whites. To go with the paints there are four new drybrushes (XS to L), a Shading Medium and a Blending Medium. The range has been in stores for trying out since 26 September, and it goes on sale on the shelves on 24 October, when a Tone Pro collectable coin will be available in stores as well.

A Big Crowdfunding Week for Board Games

Big boxes, big numbers and three more campaigns about to start.

It was a busy week on Kickstarter and Gamefound. The Heroes of Might and Magic III expansions (Factory, Bulwark and Forge) launched on 22 September and were sitting at around one million euros at the weekend. Gang Wars has reached about 540,000 euros, and Clank!: The Forgotten Vault, the tenth-anniversary campaign, is above 1.5 million euros with a deluxe storage cube in the mix. It runs until 1 October. Three more campaigns are set to start this week: Conan: Tales of Tortage and Zamora on Kickstarter, Defenders of the Realm: Definitive Edition on Gamefound (both 29 September) and Gothic: A Shadow's Quest on Gamefound (30 September).
