On the Table #42

The Khazalite Holds march out for Age of Sigmar, the Horus Heresy gets two new Battle Groups, and Talavera hosts the year's biggest teams event. Plus a look back at SPIEL Essen and a busy crowdfunding table.

The Khazalite Holds March Out

Age of Sigmar's newest faction is here, and the Fyreslayers now fight under its banner.

The Khazalite Holds army box and Battletome were released over the weekend. The range includes High Kyng Valankrom, Thrynn, Runewright, Valayan Guardians, Clangunners, Ormyr and Ashtongue, Hjulda Drakkblud, Clanshields, the Oathkeeper Cannon and the Gholems of Gazul. Two boxed sets round it out: Spearhead: Magmic Fyrd and Regiment of Renown: Fjori's Vengeance. The Battletome comes in a standard and a Gamer's Edition, and the second wave opens for pre-order on November 7.

Fyreslayers have switched to the Khazalite faction keyword, and their rules were updated along the way. A fresh faction with a long model list is exactly the moment to think about storage.

Two New Battle Groups For The Horus Heresy

Games Workshop adds two big Legiones Astartes boxes to the Great Crusade.

Both Battle Groups are meant to save money compared with buying the contents separately. Pre-orders are coming "soon"; prices and dates have not been announced yet.

  • Vanguard Assault Battle Group: 20 Mark VI Tactical Squad Legionaries, 10 Mark VI Assault Squad Legionaries, a Legion Praetor with Power Sword, a Contemptor Dreadnought, a Deimos Pattern Rhino and a Deimos Pattern Predator Battle Tank
  • Heavy Assault Battle Group: 20 Mark III Tactical Squad Legionaries, 10 Mark III Breacher Squad Legionaries, 5 Mark III Legion Command Squad Legionaries, 6 Cataphractii Terminators and a Land Raider Explorator/Carrier

That is a lot of legionaries, plus a Land Raider that needs a proper home. Horus Heresy armies are big, and so are our trays for them.

804 Players In Talavera

The year's biggest teams event took place in Spain, and we were there as supporters.

The Talavera GT brought 804 players together on 134 teams of six over six rounds. Wargames Adictos won on points with a lineup of World Eaters, Imperial Knights, Necrons, Dark Angels, Orks and Thousand Sons. Team Euskadi, 3 Arpía and Cónclave finished undefeated.

We are happy to have been supporters of the event again this year. Thanks to the organizers and to everyone who made it such a great weekend. See you at the next one!

SPIEL Essen 2026 By The Numbers

About 230,000 visitors came, and all four days sold out.

Brettspielbox looked back at the fair: about 230,000 visitors (around 220,000 in 2025), 997 exhibitors from 53 nations and 81,200 square meters across eight halls. Trends included a comeback of trick-taking games, more cozy and party games, a growing number of expert games and a steady stream of licensed products and video game adaptations. The board game market is reported to have grown by about 8 percent in 2026, partly thanks to trading cards.

Middle-earth Keeps Its Hold On The Table

The Lord of the Rings trick-taking trilogy gets its finale.

The Return of the King closes the cooperative trick-taking trilogy with 20 new chapters that follow Frodo and Sam toward Mount Doom while Aragorn unites the free peoples. It works as a standalone game and has a solo mode. The English edition is planned for February 2027, with the German edition to follow later. At SPIEL, The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship from Asmodee also won the Beeple Award.
